The design of the FOCUS-2 system is based on the pioneering IBM Education & Career Exploration System (ECES) developed for use by students. ECES was one of the very first computer assisted career planning systems developed and field tested. The ECES system design was created by a team of nationally prominent educators and career counseling psychologists from the Columbia University Teachers College and the Harvard University Graduate School of Education.

The ECES team was organized and directed by Dr. Frank J. Minor, Senior Psychologist of the IBM Corporation (www.frankminor.com ). Dr. Minor proposed the ECES system project in 1967 to Professor Donald E. Super, Chairman of the Columbia University Graduate School of Counseling Psychology at Teachers College. Dr. Super liked the project's ideas and joined the ECES team.

Dr. Frank J. Minor, Senior Psychologist in the IBM Corporation was the team leader. He directed the design, development and field testing of the ECES system. Dr. Minor has received international awards for his research in the design of computer application for use in the fields of education, career planning, military intelligence, speech and data entry devices.
